The Second International Conference of the Political Sphere Institute, “Restoring History…”, Took Place on 3–4 May

On 3–4 May 2013, the Second International Conference of the Political Sphere Institute, “Restoring History: Memory and Society in Central and Eastern Europe”, took place at the Embassy of Lithuania in Minsk. Around thirty scholars from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine participated, together with numerous guests from Belarus and abroad.

The conference included two public discussions.

On 3 May, the Crown Plaza hotel hosted the public discussion “Kastus Kalinouski and the Uprising of 1863–64 in the Historical Memory of Belarus, Lithuania and Poland.”

On 4 May, a second public discussion addressed problems of historical memory and the politics of history in Central and Eastern Europe. The discussions brought together researchers, experts and representatives of public initiatives.

The conference focused on the ways in which societies in the region remember, reinterpret and institutionalise the past, as well as on the role of historians, intellectuals and civic actors in shaping public memory.
