The Nation as a Practical Category from the “Theory of Nationalism”. Part 2

The third meeting of the research seminar “Projects of the Nation: Belarus and Ukraine, 1990-2008” at the Political Sphere Center for Political Analysis.

The seminar will take place on 12 November 2008 at 19:00 in the courtyard of CSI.

Speaker: Andrei Kazakevich
The theory of nationalism, which, with its corresponding authors, texts, and schemes, became an academic canon for social researchers in the region in the early 2000s, has firmly entered scholarly circulation and even curricula.

Adherence to the “canon” is mandatory for demonstrating the academic competence of a researcher (teacher), although conceptually the canon is not integrated.

Nevertheless, some generally accepted schemes (or the precise canonical and often uncritical reception of these schemes) have certain assumptions and limitations that need to be identified.

The aim of the seminar is to identify these assumptions and limitations, and also to carry out a reduction of the category of “nation”, which, in our view, is essential for beginning practical research on national projects in Belarus and Ukraine.
