Summer School 2016, “Game and School: The Practice of Building a University”, will take place on 6–7 July

Summer schools have already become an integral part of the Flying University’s life and may claim to be one of the community’s most enduring traditions. In addition, the summer school is the best opportunity to reflect on another year, to communicate closely, and to develop new directions for growth. It is always a time of intellectually and emotionally rich communication.

This year we propose the theme “Game and School”. Both concepts have become central to our life this year; both are at once content and a form of organisation, a challenge and a response for contemporary education.

The programme will include three traditional parts:

1. Plenary presentations. This part will offer all participants talks on the main theme; these presentations and their discussions form the backbone of the summer school.

We propose turning to reflection on the conceptualisation and practical implementation, launched this year, of the “playing university”. What does our experience of the “Schools of Masters of the Game” show? How have our ideas about Game changed in relation to the University? The content of education and “school technologies” for homo ludens. New plans and development prospects.

2. Open Department. Presentations by summer school participants on topics they would very much like to share with the community. The formats may vary: lecture, presentation, discussion, master class, and so on. The Open Department sessions will take place in parallel, and participants will be able to choose what interests them most.
3. Club space. A space open for creative self-expression and free communication in the evenings. This year, the club space is likely to host the ceremony of admitting new members to the university corporation “Convent Ludenia”.

Continuing last year’s tradition, we are organising this summer school entirely with our own resources, thereby forming a responsible and viable community. The personal contribution will be 60 dollars, paid in Belarusian rubles at the exchange rate, for all four days of the summer school. We invite community members to contribute not only for themselves but also “for that other guy/girl”. Additional funds will be used to invite interesting guests and also to support those whose circumstances do not allow them to take part.

This year the summer school will take place amid the picturesque landscapes of the Braslav Lakes.
