Challenges for Belarusian Foreign Policy and the Post-Soviet Space after 2008

What main trends can be traced in the development of post-Soviet countries after 2008? Which countries and processes determine the economic and political development of the region? How can we define the roles of the EU, Russia, the United States, China, and Turkey in the region? Can Belarus’s place in these processes be outlined, and what challenges and prospects do they open for the country?

A study by the Political Sphere Institute seeks to answer these questions. Its main focus is the experience of economic, political, and military cooperation among the countries of the EAEU and the Eastern Partnership after 2008, the year of the global economic crisis and the Russian-Georgian conflict.

The collected data make it possible to draw several conclusions about the future of the region; the prospects and problems of Eurasian and European integration; lines of open and potential conflicts; problems of political confrontation and interaction; and Belarus’s place in these processes. Special attention will be paid to the ability of the EU, Russia, the United States, China, and Turkey to influence the fate of the region and the development of individual countries.
