THE FIRST WORLD WAR, NATION FORMATION, AND THE EMERGENCE OF STATES IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

On 31 May 2014, within the Third International Conference of the Political Sphere Institute entitled “Wars in the Political and Cultural Tradition of Belarus and the Countries of Central and Eastern Europe”, a public discussion will be held on the topic: “The First World War, Nation Formation, and the Emergence of States in Central and Eastern Europe”.
In the West, the First World War is called the Great War. For Belarus, however, it has always remained in the shadow of another Great War: the Patriotic War. Although both events turned the whole world upside down, changed borders throughout the region, and left a bloody mark on Belarus, we remember one war and have almost forgotten the other. Why did this happen? The centenary of the beginning of the First World War is an excellent occasion to recall this event and its significance for our country.
What impact did the First World War have on the political and social situation in our region? How did nation-building unfold in the whirlwind of war? Would Europe’s political map have looked different had the war not taken place? Can the emergence of Belarusian statehood be called a “result” of the First World War?
These questions will be discussed during the public discussion “The First World War, Nation Formation, and the Emergence of States in Central and Eastern Europe”, which will take place on 31 May 2013 in Minsk at the CECH creative space (Nezavisimosti Ave., 58, building 6). It begins at 15:00. Admission is free!
The discussion is organised by the Political Sphere Institute for Political Studies, the Flying University, and the EuroBelarus International Consortium.
The invited discussants are: Doctor of Historical Sciences Ales Smalianchuk (Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences), Candidate of Historical Sciences Uladzimir Liakhouski (BSU), Doctor of History Rimantas Miknys (Lithuanian Institute of History), and Doctor of History Joanna Gierowska-Kałłaur (Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences). The discussion will be moderated by Candidate of Historical Sciences Ales Pashkevich.
