Leanid Tsimashenka, Controversial Issues of the Union of Brest in the History of the Peoples of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Lecture and Discussion on 28 May

At the end of the sixteenth century, a landmark historical event took place in Central and Eastern Europe, on the territories of present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. Its manifestations and consequences remain visible to this day in various spheres of the region’s social, political, and cultural life. It is therefore not surprising that the Union of Brest of 1596, the history of the Uniate Church, and its separate territorial-administrative structures have become one of the key research problems in Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Polish historiography. Moreover, the question of the Union of Brest remains a subject of sharp scholarly and extra-scholarly debate.

Was the Union of Brest inspired by external forces, or was it the result of transformations within the Church itself? Did the Greek Catholic Church continue the Eastern Christian tradition? How does contemporary historical scholarship define what resulted from the encounter of two cultural and religious worlds, Western and Eastern Christianity? What grounds exist for such interpretations?

On 28 May, the Flying University invites you to a lecture and discussion with Ukrainian historian and professor at Ivan Franko Drohobych University (Lviv region) Leanid Tsimashenka. A noted specialist in the history of the Church in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, he will speak on “Controversial Issues of the Union of Brest in the History of the Peoples of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth”. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with invited Belarusian experts. The meeting will be moderated by Candidate of Historical Sciences Aleh Dziarnovich (Institute of History, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus).

Professor Leanid Tsimashenka’s lecture will begin on 28 May at 18:30 at the “Lozhki” café (Kamsamolskaya, 34). Admission is free!
