Kazakevich: “Even for the Belarusian Authorities It Turned Out to Be Too Much”

“In the first days there was confidence among the Russian leadership, and I think among the Belarusian leadership as well, that the campaign would be victorious and very quick: the Ukrainian army would scatter, negotiations with Zelensky on capitulation would succeed, and then they would divide up the ‘inheritance’ left from Ukraine.

And the Belarusian leadership apparently hoped to take part in this,” the political scientist says. “But after about four days it became obvious that the situation was dragging on and that the West’s reaction would be harsh.

We see that the sanctions are unprecedented in nature and will have enormous consequences for the Belarusian economy.

In addition, the ‘special operation’ itself caused enormous tension in Belarusian society and a surge of protests.

A lump of domestic and foreign policy problems began to accumulate.

Against this background, continuing aggressive, militaristic rhetoric turned out to be too much even for the Belarusian authorities.

First they ‘jumped’ to the peacekeeping agenda, and now they are trying to distance themselves more and more from what is happening in Ukraine.

However, according to Andrei Kazakevich, the Belarusian ruler did not succeed in playing the “negotiation platform” card and becoming a mediator between Zelensky and Putin: Belarus has been recognized as an accomplice in aggression, and there is no reason to expect an easing of sanctions from the West.
