International Academic Conference “Nation, State, Region: National Movements and the Regionalist Idea in Belarus and Lithuania”

The conference, which will take place on 11-12 May in Minsk, is intended to bring together the main specialists on the regionalist idea and national movements in Belarus and Lithuania.

The aim of the conference is to deepen comparative analysis, rethink the trajectories of nation-building in the region, and broaden the interdisciplinary research perspective.

It is planned that the development of the Belarusian, Lithuanian, and Polish movements and of the regionalist idea will be examined at the level of 1) ideas and intellectual projects, 2) the evolution of the system of political and cultural organizations, and 3) the fundamental social and cultural processes of the region of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Participants
Around 40 specialists from Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, and other countries who specialize in the study of the Belarusian, regionalist, and Lithuanian movements.

Among them are Ales Smalianchuk (director of the Institute of Historical Studies of Belarus), Dariusz Szpoper (head of the Department of the History of the State and Law of Poland at the University of Gdańsk), Rimantas Miknys (director of the Lithuanian Institute of History), and others.

The working languages of the conference are Belarusian, Polish, Russian, and English.

Deadline for submitting applications to participate: 2 March 2012.

Technical details
To participate in the international conference, please send:
1) a CV in any of the working languages
2) an abstract of 2-3 thousand characters in any of the working languages
3) also indicate in the letter whether visa support is required.

The organizers will apply for free Belarusian visas.

In individual cases, reimbursement of accommodation and travel expenses may be considered.

Publication
Following the conference, it is planned to publish a specialized volume devoted to the current state of research on national movements and the regionalist idea in Belarus in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
