Ideas, Concepts, Political Projects: the Krajowy Movement in Belarus and Lithuania from the Late Nineteenth to the Early Twentieth Century

On 24 November a research seminar will take place under the title “Ideas, Concepts, Political Projects: the Krajowy Movement in Belarus and Lithuania from the Late Nineteenth to the Early Twentieth Century”.

The seminar is organised by the Institute for Political Studies “Political Sphere” as part of its regular research seminar series.

The discussion will focus on the krajowy movement in the lands of Belarus and Lithuania at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This movement proposed a political and cultural vision rooted in the historical legacy of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and in the idea of a common regional civic identity.

The seminar will examine the intellectual sources of the movement, its political concepts, its understanding of the region, and its place in the development of modern Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish political thought.

Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between krajowość, national movements, imperial politics and the search for forms of political autonomy. The participants will also discuss the relevance of this tradition for contemporary interpretations of the history of Belarus and Lithuania.

Researchers, students and everyone interested in the political and intellectual history of the region are invited to attend.
