EuroBelarus: “The International Congress of Belarusian Studies Award: Intrigue Until the Last Moment”

The names of the laureates of the International Congress of Belarusian Studies Award will remain a secret, even for the organizing committee, until the very last moment before the award ceremony.

This was stated to the Information Service of “EuroBelarus” (http://eurobelarus.info/) by Candidate of Sociological Sciences Aliaksei Lastouski from the Political Sphere Institute, one of the organizers of the International Congress of Belarusian Studies.

Let us recall that quite recently the shortlist (http://eurobelarus.info/news/society/2013/06/06/abveshchany-short-l-st-prem-m-zhnarodnaga-kangresa-dasledchyka-belarus.html) of the award was announced. The award will be presented in three nominations: social sciences (political science, sociology), humanities (philosophy, philology, linguistics, art history), and history.
“The selection process for publications was carried out in a completely open format,” Aliaksei Lastouski noted. “Anyone could nominate either their own text or recommend for the award those they considered worthy.

The technical requirements for the texts were minimal: it had to be a scholarly publication.”

The collection of works continued until mid-February of this year. “When we had gathered all the texts, we sent them to the experts.

Three expert councils were created, one for each nomination: ‘History’, ‘Social and Political Sciences’, and ‘Humanities’.

And, thanks to the support of ‘EuroBelarus’ (http://eurobelarus.info/), the councils carried out a professional assessment of the submitted works,” the representative of the award’s organizing committee explained.

How was the evaluation carried out?

Each council included about ten experts, who assessed all publications that had passed the initial technical selection.

These experts compiled their own rankings, selecting the five best publications, in their view, according to two criteria.

The first criterion determines what contribution a given publication makes to scholarship.

The second criterion is the use of new methods or exemplary work with generally known methods.
