26–27 October 2018. Lithuania-Belarus Civic Forum “What Unites Us?”
Lithuania and Belarus are not only neighbouring countries. In addition to a history whose roots go back to ancient times, the peoples of these states are connected by extensive economic and cultural ties. Lithuanians live in Belarus, and Belarusians live in Lithuania. The special connection between the countries is confirmed by shared national symbols, such as Vilnius, the historic capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. People in both countries cherish common historical figures: Grand Duke Vytautas, the Radziwiłł princes, Kościuszko, Kalinowski and many others. Much suggests that social and interstate relations should be excellent, but this is not the case.
Unfortunately, existing problems have come to dominate bilateral relations. Among other things, many misunderstandings arise around historical topics that, at first glance, should unite the nations. All this not only complicates political relations, but also hinders the development of ties between intellectuals, cultural figures, business and academia.
This should not be the case. Without forgetting existing problems, we should seek points of contact on issues and problems that we share. Starting a dialogue and establishing cooperation for the future is the main goal of the first Lithuanian-Belarusian Civic Forum.
The mission of the forum is to expand informal civic dialogue between Belarus and Lithuania in order to discuss the prospects and problems of interstate cooperation and to deepen mutual understanding and respect between the countries and peoples of Lithuania and Belarus.
The Forum will bring together 100 representatives of academia, business, the expert community and official structures of Lithuania and Belarus.
The forum is organised by the Municipality of Klaipėda, Klaipėda University, and a number of civic organisations and initiatives: the Jerzy Giedroyc Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation, the Institute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Political Sphere Institute.
