Political Sphere Research Seminar on 14 February: “Historical Memory and National Identity”

The Political Sphere research seminar serves as a space for professional communication and exchange of ideas in the study of politics, as well as for improving methodology and strategies for analyzing political processes.

The seminar hosts presentations of current results of political, social, and economic research.

Discussions of national identity and historical memory usually unfold in the mode of proposing various projects, criticizing official discourse, or making generalized reflections.

Meanwhile, sociological information is usually bypassed, although it can provide an objective picture of the state of the collective consciousness of Belarusian residents.

Among the body of sociological studies on this topic, two surveys conducted by the Novak sociological laboratory in 2009 and 2012 on the topic “National Identity Through the Eyes of Belarusians” should be singled out.

Within the framework of the Political Sphere research seminar and the School of Political Analysis of the Flying University, leading sociologist of the Novak Laboratory for Axiometric Research Nadzeia Yafimava will speak about the methodological “kitchen” of these studies.

What indicators can be identified for studying national identity and historical memory? How should the survey procedure be organized? What pitfalls await the researcher?

And what can the data of sociological studies provide, and how should they be interpreted and generalized?

Institute researcher Aliaksei Lastouski will also take part in the seminar as a co-presenter. He will address one aspect of the study of Belarusian historical memory: the question of the origins of national statehood.
