Do We Need Knowledge about Elites?

Recent local council elections were held in Belarus.

Over the past two decades, the attitude of the active part of society toward elections has changed, and changes have also taken place within local authorities themselves.

The latest study by the Political Sphere Institute, “Regional Elites in Belarus: Evolution in 1999-2014 Based on the Example of Regional Councils,” traces important trends at the regional level and provides additional grounds for discussing knowledge about regional elites and attitudes toward them.

What new insights do studies of local elites provide?

What does this knowledge change in our understanding of the current state of society?

Is this knowledge useful for representatives of local civil society?

Who can be considered part of the elites today, and how should they be studied?

Andrei Kazakevich (director of the Political Sphere Institute) and Vadzim Smok (researcher and staff member of the Political Sphere Institute) will present the results of the latest study, as well as the research and publishing activities of the Political Sphere Institute.

The discussion following the study will include Aksana Shelest (Minsk), Ales Smalianchuk (Hrodna), Siarhei Tokts (Hrodna), Ina Sorkina (Hrodna), and other representatives of Hrodna’s intellectual and civic community and media.

The presentation and discussion will take place on April 24 at 19:00 in the building of the Greek Catholic parish in Hrodna at 32a Haradnichanskaya St.
