Presentation of a book about Kastus Kalinouski on 8 February 2016

8 February
The Belarusian Collegium and the “Lohvinau” Bookstore
invite you to the presentation of the book
“Kastuś Kalinoŭski and the Nation-Building Process in Belarus.
“Kastuś Kalinoŭski and the Nation-Building Process in Belarus” (Minsk, 2015).

The figure of Kastus Kalinouski has had an enormous influence on the history of modern Belarus, but not only through his activities and his actual “historical personality”; also through the cultural legend that arose around him and around the uprising of 1863–1864.

What role is played in the formation of national identity by historical scholarship, and what role by his popular heroization and “historical myth-making”?

The issues of interaction between scholarly and popular understandings of the past, using one of the brightest events in Belarusian history as an example, were discussed at an international conference in London in March 2014.

This book was published on the basis of the conference materials.

The presentation will feature Belarusian historians, cultural scholars, and political scientists:
Ales Smalianchuk, editor of the book, Doctor of History, Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
Iryna Dubianetskaya, Doctor of Theology, Academic Director of the Belarusian Collegium,
Andrei Kazakevich, Doctor of Political Science (PhD), Belarusian Collegium, Political Sphere Institute,
Ales Krautsevich, Doctor of History, Centre for Belarusian Studies (Warsaw),
Andrus Unuchak, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus,
Yazep Yanushkevich, Candidate of Philological Sciences, writer.

The presentation will take place on 8 February 2015 at the “Lohvinau” bookstore (37a Nezalezhnastsi Avenue).

It begins at 19:00.
