Establishment of the Congress Prize for the Best German-Language Monograph on Belarusian Topics

The Organizing Committee of the International Congress of Belarusian Studies announces the establishment of another honorary Prize for the best monograph on Belarusian topics, this time for German-language authors.

In 2015, the honorary prize was awarded for an English-language monograph (received by Margarita Balmaceda), and in 2016 for the best Polish-language monograph (awarded to Anna Engelking).

The results of the competition among German-language monographs are planned to be announced during the VII International Congress of Belarusian Studies, which will take place on 15-17 September 2017 in Warsaw.

The honorary prizes for foreign-language monographs are intended for foreign researchers who are connected with Belarus neither by origin nor by academic career.

In Germany there is a stable academic interest in Belarusian topics, reflected in an existing body of research, thematic seminars and conferences, scholarship programs, and translations.

The publishing series on the history of Belarus coordinated by Thomas Bohn (which has also published works by Belarusian historians) deserves special mention.

Fundamental works by German historians Bernhard Chiari, Rainer Lindner, and Thomas Bohn have been translated into Belarusian and have become visible and integrated into Belarusian scholarship.

The establishment of a Prize for German-language monographs is intended to support and expand already established academic ties, and to promote better awareness of the latest research and developments on Belarusian topics in Germany.

The Prize is planned to be honorary in nature, which means that no financial reward for the author is envisaged.

German-language monographs dealing with Belarusian topics and published during 2011-2016 are accepted for consideration.
