Moscow Made Concessions to Minsk to Soften the Looming Economic Crisis — Kazakevich

The Belarusian authorities supported Russia in its confrontation with Ukraine and the West, and therefore reasonably expected compensation from the Russian Federation for losses caused by the sanctions blow and other economic problems.

This view was expressed to a Politring correspondent by Andrei Kazakevich, PhD in Political Science and director of the Political Sphere Institute.

According to him, Russia made noticeable concessions to Belarus for a number of reasons.
“Russia’s confrontation with the West is at its peak since the collapse of the USSR.

Alexander Lukashenka demonstrated unequivocal political support for Russia.

Moreover, Belarus has effectively become an accomplice in Russia’s special operation in Ukraine (which Ukraine itself and Western countries regard as military aggression), providing its territory and military and civilian infrastructure.

As a result, Western countries are imposing additional sanctions on Belarus, and the sanctions against Russia, Belarus’s main trading partner, will also have a negative effect on the Belarusian economy,” he noted.

In such a situation, Kazakevich believes, the expectations of the Belarusian authorities that Russia will at least partially compensate losses from the restrictions introduced look logical.
“Russia made a number of concessions in order to support the Belarusian economy and soften the coming crisis.

But how effective all this appears to be remains an open question,” he stated.
