Seminar “Transition from the BSSR to the Republic of Belarus: A Time of (Lost) Opportunities through the Eyes of Witnesses” (19.05)

Dear friends,

The Political Sphere Institute (Vilnius) invites you on 19 May to a meeting-seminar
“Transition from the BSSR to the Republic of Belarus:
A Time of (Lost) Opportunities through the Eyes of Witnesses”
with invited experts and witnesses of the era.

Special guest: Uladzislau Navazhylaŭ (Gods Tower band).

Moderator: Aliaksei Lastouski.

The late 1980s and early 1990s became a time of radical change for Belarus.

Not only did the communist order and the Soviet federal system collapse, but significant transformations also took place in the economic, social and cultural spheres.

Today, the Belarusian and Russian authorities describe this time as a “wild” period, a period of destruction, but it was also a time of the formation of new institutions and new opportunities.

How can we convey the era of transition through a personal lens, through the voices of witnesses?

What personal strategies were used to overcome the difficulties of transition?

How did the radical change in the social order affect the status and opportunities of social groups?

Who gained and who lost from the transition?

And, ultimately, could a different Belarus have emerged then, or did we lose our chance?

Venue: Vilnius, Ivan Luckievič Belarusian Museum in Vilnius, Vilniaus g. 20.

Start: 18:00.

The meeting is held within the framework of the Lost in Transition project (https://transition-dialogue.org/lost-in-transition/), implemented by Austausch e.V. with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office and the “Aufarbeitung” Foundation (Germany).
