International PhD Programme for Belarus (2012 intake)

The Belarusian Academic and Expert Consortium, within the framework of the Flying University programme, announces the second intake for the International PhD Programme for Belarus in the social sciences and humanities.

Founders of the Consortium:

The coordinator of the International PhD Programme for Belarus is the Political Sphere Institute.

The programme is organised on a distance-learning basis. The doctoral dissertation is written in Belarus, and the completed or substantially completed text is submitted for defence in absentia or externally at universities in Lithuania, Poland and other European countries. The university for the defence is chosen individually, depending on language preparation, the dissertation topic and other parameters.

The programme provides scholarly consultation, technical assistance, academic communication and methodological support in the form of seminars, liaison with a foreign university and advocacy for the dissertation author’s interests, as well as compensation of all expenses connected with the defence (including fees for Belarusian and foreign consultants, university defence fees; coverage of travel, accommodation, scholarly literature and other costs may also be considered).

The dissertation may be written in English, Russian or Belarusian. The choice of language depends on the academic discipline, the dissertation topic and the university where the defence will take place. The standard duration of the programme is three years. The period of study may be shortened or extended on an individual basis.

Requirements for candidates:

  • Completed higher education (university diploma or master’s degree).
  • Knowledge of Belarusian and Russian sufficient for understanding lectures and writing texts. Knowledge of English is desirable.
  • Scholarly, expert or analytical publications.

The selection results will be known within one month after the application deadline. Five people will be selected through the competition.

To participate in the competition, please send:

  • A CV with a photo, indicating education, professional experience, publications and other relevant information.
  • A motivation letter in free form. Length: up to 2 pages.
  • A short description of the dissertation research, including the topic, description of the research problem, plan and bibliography (no more than 10 items). Total length: up to 5 pages.
